Hiring a Web Designer in South Africa: What to Expect, What It Costs and What to Ask

Looking for a web designer in South Africa? What a good one does, what they charge in 2026, how the process should run from first call to launch, and the questions that separate the good from the cheap.

A web designer in South Africa costs anywhere from R3,000 to R150,000 depending on who you hire. This guide explains what you are paying for at each level, how a proper project runs, and the questions that tell you quickly whether a designer is worth it.

What a web designer actually does

The title covers three different jobs. A designer decides how the site looks and how people move through it. A developer builds it so it loads fast and works on every phone. An SEO specialist makes sure Google can find it and that the pages answer what people search for. A freelancer usually does one of these well. A studio does all three; an agency hires separate people for each and bills you for the meetings between them.

How a good project runs

  • A 30-minute call where the designer asks about your customers and your competitors, not just your colours.

  • A written price that includes VAT, the number of pages and what happens after launch.

  • A deposit, then a homepage design on a live link you can open on your own phone within a week or two.

  • Feedback in plain language over WhatsApp or email, then the rest of the pages.

  • Launch with the Google basics done: titles, descriptions, Search Console, Google Business Profile.

  • A monthly plan or care agreement that says who does changes and how fast.

That is how we run it at Christoffel, and most sites go live in two to six weeks.

Red flags

  • The portfolio is screenshots, not live links you can open.

  • No price on the website and a reluctance to put one in writing.

  • The domain gets registered in the designer’s name.

  • “SEO included” with no explanation of what is done each month.

  • Nobody can tell you who will actually build the site.

Ask the twelve questions in how to choose a web design company and the weak ones rule themselves out.

Do you need a local web designer?

Not for the build. Design, feedback and launch all run online, and the same team can serve Kimberley, Bloemfontein or Cape Town. Where local matters is SEO: whoever builds your site should know how to rank it in your town, with a Google Business Profile, local pages and schema that names your area. If you are in Kimberley or Bloemfontein we will also meet you in person.

Web designer FAQ

How much does a web designer charge per hour in South Africa?

Freelancers charge R350 to R900 an hour; agencies R900 to R2,000. Most work is quoted per project, and a monthly plan is usually cheaper than hourly changes if you update your site more than a few times a year.

How long does a web designer take to build a site?

Two to six weeks for a small business site, if you supply your text and photos promptly. Larger sites with a CMS take six to ten weeks.

Can a web designer also do my SEO?

The good ones do, because the site structure, speed and content are most of the job. With us SEO is part of every monthly plan, not a separate retainer.
