Why agency SEO costs so much
An agency retainer pays for people: a strategist, a content writer, a link builder, a developer to make changes on your site and an account manager to explain it all. For a national brand competing on “car insurance” that team is necessary. For a plumber in Kimberley, a dentist in Bloemfontein or a guest house in Cape Town it is a lot of overhead for a small set of searches.
There is also a structural problem: the agency does not control your website. Every fix becomes a ticket to a developer somewhere else, and the monthly report quietly turns into a list of recommendations nobody implemented.
What local SEO actually involves
For a business serving a town or a region, the work is well defined: a complete Google Business Profile with posts and reviews, a fast website with a page for each service and area, schema markup, Search Console set up and watched, a few genuinely useful articles, and consistent name, address and phone number across directories. We explain the pieces in what local SEO is and who needs it and the profile setup step by step in our Google Business Profile guide.
What you should get for the money
Whatever you pay, insist on three things every month:
A short report in plain English: what was done, what moved, what is next.
Changes made on the website itself, not just recommended.
Rankings tracked for the searches that bring you customers, not vanity keywords.
Be wary of anyone who guarantees the number one spot. Nobody controls Google, and the ones who promise it usually deliver a ranking for your own business name.
How we price it
We do not sell SEO as a separate retainer. It is part of the monthly plan that comes with every website we build: SEO Essentials at R1,200 a month, Local SEO at R2,000 and Advanced SEO at R3,500, after a once-off build of R5,000 to R20,000. That one fee also covers hosting, updates, backups and the changes you ask for. The full breakdown is in our website design price list.
SEO cost FAQ
Is SEO worth it for a small business in South Africa?
If your customers search for what you do, yes. A single new client a month usually pays for local SEO many times over. If your business runs entirely on referrals and you do not want more enquiries, spend the money elsewhere.
How long before SEO pays for itself?
Map results can move within weeks once your Google Business Profile is complete. Website rankings for your town and service typically take three to six months. Plan for six months before you judge it.
Can I pay for SEO once instead of monthly?
You can pay for an audit or a one-off setup, and it helps. But Google rewards sites that keep improving, and competitors keep moving, so a once-off job slowly loses ground. That is the honest reason SEO is priced monthly.
