If you're budgeting for a new website, here's the direct answer: a custom small-business website in South Africa usually costs R15,000 to R50,000 if you pay for it all upfront, or from about R5,000 once-off plus a monthly fee on a build-and-care plan. Which one works out cheaper depends on what happens after launch.
What determines the price of a website?
Three things move the number most: how many pages and custom sections the site needs, whether you want a content management system so you can update it yourself after launch, and how much original design work goes into making the site feel like your brand rather than a template.
Number of pages and the complexity of each one
Custom design work versus an off-the-shelf template
Whether you need access to edit content yourself
Extra functionality: bookings, e-commerce, galleries, forms
Two ways to pay: once-off or build + monthly
South African web designers mostly charge in one of two ways, and the difference matters more than the headline number.
1. Once-off (the traditional agency model)
You pay for the build upfront, typically R15,000 to R50,000 for a custom small-business site. Hosting is usually billed separately, and changes, fixes and SEO work after launch are quoted per job. For many small businesses, that big upfront bill is the reason the website never gets built.
2. Build + monthly
You pay a much smaller once-off fee to build the site, then a monthly fee that covers hosting and keeps the site working: updates, security, small changes and, on bigger plans, ongoing SEO and content. The cost is spread out, and someone is responsible for the site after launch.
What it actually costs over two years
Here's an honest comparison over 24 months (excl. VAT):
Once-off R30,000 build + R150/month hosting: about R33,600, before paying for any changes, fixes or SEO.
Christoffel Starter, R5,000 + R1,200/month: about R33,800, with hosting, updates, security and small changes included the whole time.
Over two years the total is roughly the same. The difference is that one site gets looked after every month and the other is on its own the day it launches. We've written more about what a monthly website fee should include, and the red flags to watch for.
Why do prices vary so much between designers?
Freelancers, agencies and DIY platforms are selling different products, not just different price points. A once-off build with no support after launch isn't the same thing as a studio that designs, builds, hosts and keeps improving your site. When you compare quotes, look at what happens after the site goes live, not just the number on the invoice. Our guide on how to choose a web design company in South Africa covers the questions to ask.
Is the cheapest option actually worth it?
Not always. A very low quote usually means a templated design with minimal customisation and no real plan for how the site will perform on Google. Weigh the total cost of ownership, including what future updates and fixes will cost, rather than just the upfront fee.
Hidden costs to ask about
Domain name: usually a small yearly fee. Make sure it's registered in your name.
Email: business email (like you@yourbusiness.co.za) is often a separate monthly cost.
Photography: real photos of your work make a big difference. Budget for them if you don't have good ones.
Copywriting: some designers expect you to write every word yourself.
Changes after launch: ask whether small edits are included or billed per job.
Plugins and licences: some platforms charge extra for booking tools, forms or shop features.
What we charge at Christoffel

Growth: R10,000 once-off + R2,500/month

Frequently asked questions
Are website prices in South Africa quoted with VAT?
It varies, so always ask. Our prices are shown excluding VAT, and VAT is added on the invoice.
Is a once-off website cheaper than a monthly plan?
Upfront, a monthly plan is far cheaper. Over two years the totals are often similar, but a monthly plan includes hosting, updates and support that a once-off build usually charges for separately.
What happens if I cancel a monthly plan?
With us there's no contract. If you cancel, hosting stops and the site goes offline, but your domain stays yours.
How much does a basic website cost in South Africa?
A simple, professionally designed site starts from about R5,000 once-off plus a monthly fee on a build-and-care plan, or from roughly R15,000 upfront with a traditional once-off agency build.
