When someone in Kimberley searches "electrician Kimberley" or "dentist near me", Google shows them two things: a map with three businesses on it, and a list of websites below. If you're in neither, that customer never knows you exist. They phone whoever shows up.
The good news: Kimberley is not Johannesburg. There are far fewer businesses competing for each search, so a business that does the basics properly can get to the top surprisingly fast. Most businesses in town simply haven't done them.
Here's the checklist we work through for every Kimberley client. The first five steps cost nothing but an afternoon.
1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile is the listing that shows up on the map and in the box on the right of the search results. It's free, and it's the single biggest lever for local searches.
Claiming it isn't enough. Fill in everything:
Hours, including public holidays
Services, listed one by one, with a sentence each
A description that says what you do and where, in plain language
Photos of your real work, your team and your premises. Not stock photos.
If customers come to you (a shop in Hadison Park, a practice in Belgravia), show your address. If you go to them (plumbers, electricians, pool services), hide the address and set a service area instead: Kimberley, Galeshewe, Roodepan, Ritchie, Barkly West, wherever you actually work.
2. Choose the right primary category
This one small setting matters more than most people realise. Google uses your primary category to decide which searches you're eligible for. "Electrician" and "Electrical installation service" are different categories that show up for different searches.
Pick the one that matches what customers actually type, then add secondary categories for the rest of what you do.
3. Make your name, address and phone number match everywhere
Google cross-checks your business details across the internet: your website, your Google profile, Facebook, directories. If one says "Smith Plumbing" with a landline and another says "Smith Plumbing & Gas" with a cellphone number from 2019, Google trusts both of them less.
Pick one version of your name, address and number, and make every listing match it exactly. This is boring work, and it pays.
4. Say "Kimberley" on your website, where it's natural
Google can't rank you for Kimberley searches if your website never mentions Kimberley. Check three places:
Your page title (the blue link in Google), for example "Aircon Installation in Kimberley | Your Business"
Your main heading on the home page
One or two sentences that name the areas you serve
Don't stuff it into every line. One clear mention in the right places beats twenty awkward ones.
5. Give each service its own page
A single "Services" page listing twelve things ranks for none of them. If you do aircon installation, aircon repairs and electrical compliance certificates, each deserves its own page. Each page should say what the service is, who it's for, what it costs (or roughly), and that you do it in Kimberley.
When someone searches "aircon repairs Kimberley", Google would much rather send them to a page about exactly that.
6. Make your website fast and easy to use on a phone
Most local searches happen on a phone, often on mobile data. If your site takes eight seconds to load, people hit back and phone the next business. Google notices that too.
At minimum, your site should:
Load in a few seconds on a mobile connection
Have a tap-to-call button and a WhatsApp button at the top
Show your area and hours without anyone having to dig
7. Ask every happy client for a Google review
Reviews are one of the strongest local ranking signals, and they're what customers read before they phone you. The trick is to make it effortless: send a direct link to your review form (you'll find "Ask for reviews" in your Google profile) by WhatsApp, right after a job goes well.
Then reply to every review, good and bad. It shows Google the profile is active, and it shows the next customer you care.
8. Get listed in local directories, and get local links
Every trustworthy website that mentions and links to your business is a vote for you. Start with the free directories South Africans actually use: Kimberley City Portal, Snupit, Yep!, Cylex and Brabys. Use exactly the same details from step 3.
Then think local: suppliers you buy from, a sports club you sponsor, a business association you belong to, clients you've done work for. A link from a real Kimberley website is worth more to you than one from a random site overseas.
9. Post on your Google profile every week
Google Business Profile has a "posts" feature that almost nobody in Kimberley uses. A weekly post with a photo of a recent job, a seasonal offer or a quick tip tells Google your business is alive. It also gives customers something fresh to look at.
Five minutes a week. Set a reminder.
10. Connect Google Search Console and check it monthly
Google Search Console is a free tool that shows you exactly which searches your website appears for, how often people click, and whether Google has found any problems. Without it, you're guessing.
Connect it once, submit your sitemap, and check it monthly. If a page isn't showing up at all, our post on why your website isn't showing up on Google covers the usual reasons.
How long does it take to show up?
Your Google Business Profile changes can take effect within days to a few weeks. Website changes usually take a few weeks to a few months to show their full effect, depending on how much work was needed and how competitive your industry is in Kimberley.
The businesses that win locally aren't the ones who did one big push. They're the ones who did the basics properly, then kept going: a review here, a post there, a new service page every month or two.
Should you do this yourself?
Steps 1 to 3, 7 and 9 you can absolutely do yourself, and you should, because nobody knows your business better than you do.
Steps 4, 5, 6 and 10 depend on your website being built properly in the first place: fast, mobile-friendly, with room for a page per service and the technical setup Google needs. If your current site makes those hard, that's usually the real problem. If you want the full picture of what's involved, read what local SEO is and whether your business needs it.
That's the work we do at Christoffel. We're a web design and SEO studio in Kimberley, and we've done exactly this for local businesses like Makespace Architects, whose organic traffic grew five-fold.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a website if I already have a Google Business Profile?
The profile gets you on the map. A website is what convinces people once they click, and it lets you rank for each individual service you offer. The two work best together.
Can I show up in Kimberley searches if my business is based somewhere else?
Google heavily favours businesses close to the searcher for local searches. If you genuinely serve Kimberley, set it as a service area on your Google profile and create a page about your Kimberley work on your website.
What does a website that does all this cost?
It depends on the size of the site. We've written an honest breakdown of what a website costs in South Africa.
Do reviews really make a difference?
Yes. The number of reviews, how recent they are, and whether you reply to them all feed into how Google ranks local businesses. They're also what customers read first.
